A Message to the WGU Texas Community
For three years, I have had the honor to lead WGU Texas as Chancellor and to promote our mission to expand access to higher education. It has been deeply rewarding to work together to help our students achieve their dreams. I extend my appreciation to all the community members and organizations who devoted time and energy in helping to shape the university to advance our mission of getting more Texans on the path to completion of their degrees. Later this month, I will return to my consulting business to help businesses and non-profit organizations shape their public policy initiatives and strategic partnerships.
Since I took office in 2014, we’ve accomplished great things together. WGU Texas grew by 75 percent. In May, WGU Texas celebrated the graduation of 202 students, the largest number of monthly graduates in the school’s history. Graduates of WGU Texas now total 6,665. And, we’re closing in on 10,000 students with 9,327 students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs. We now offer more than 60 degree programs in the high-demand career fields of IT, health professions, business and teaching.
I’m also proud of our commitment to supporting the academic and career goals of veterans, active-duty service members and their families. More than 1,504 veterans and active duty service members and their spouses are currently enrolled in WGU Texas and another 736 are graduates.
Our partnership with the Texas Association of Business expanded the university’s outreach to a broad variety of Texas-based businesses and employers. We implemented the first WGU Texas higher education state poll that generated rich statistics to inform state and community leaders. We now have more than 88 strategic education partnerships. And, we continue to advocate for increased access to state financial aid.
WGU Texas has established itself as a higher education institution focused on student success and will continue on its path of innovation, academic excellence and helping more Texans pursue the dream of earning a college degree.
A national search for my successor is underway, and I am confident that the next Chancellor will have a unique opportunity to provide leadership for our dynamic and growing university. I look forward to observing the future impact this institution will continue to have on the people it serves across Texas.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Veronica Vargas Stidvent
Chancellor, WGU Texas
