Who the Program is For:
- Licensed teachers with a bachelor’s degree who wish to earn middle or secondary certification in mathematics (5-9 and 5-12 programs only) as well as a master’s degree.
- Individuals who can typically spend 15 or more hours per week on their studies.

What You'll Learn
Essential Knowledge and Skills
We developed our online mathematics education program with significant input from experts and educational leaders who serve on our Education Program Council. You’ll become an expert in all areas of study required to earn your Master of Arts in Mathematics Education. Depending on your area of study, the program requires the following credit equivalents, also known as competency units (CUs):
- Elementary (K-6) Option: 30 Competency Units
- Middle School (5-9) Option: 30 Competency Units
- High School (5-12) Option: 32 Competency Units
The M.A. in Mathematics Education is nationally recognized by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

Foundations of Research
The Mathematics Education master’s program also requires the successful completion two-part capstone project: the instructional package and the written capstone report. The instructional package should include the instructional materials, activities, and assessments. The capstone report describes in detail the development of the instructional product. Your capstone project is something to be proud of – it's the culmination of all your hard work. Your final project allows you to take what you've learned and apply it to a real-world situation, proposing a solution to an actual issue you face in your place of business. Go ahead; show everyone what you can do!
The final master's exam will be a comprehensive oral defense. This exam may be face-to-face when possible but will most likely be done through a telephone conference. You’ll answer questions related to your studies and illustrate your level of preparation and ability to apply the education gained from your courses. The Oral Defense is a checkpoint to assure that you have acquired the required skills and knowledge specified in the program competencies.
